Michael Judd has worked with agro-ecological and whole-system designs throughout the Americas for over two decades, focusing on applying permaculture and ecological design. His projects increase local food security and community health in both tropical and temperate growing regions. He is the founder of Ecologia Edible & Ecological Landscape Design, Project Bona Fide, an international nonprofit supporting agro-ecology research, and co-founder of SilvoCulture, a Maryland based nonprofit which is helping plant 1 million nut trees in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is also the author of Edible Landscaping with a Permaculture Twist, and For the Love of PawPaws.

Michael lives with his family on a permaculture haven nestled along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Frederick, Maryland. The Judd’s haven consists of 25 acres of mixed woodlands, food forests, gardens, and a nursery designed for experimentation and education.

Smithsonian Earth Optimism Festival

After a two-year hiatus, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival returns to the National Mall this summer,
June 22–27 and June 30–July 4.

The featured programs this year are “Earth Optimism × Folklife: Inspiring Conservation Communities”
Michael Judd is participating in the “Livelihoods and Landscapes” session on Sunday, June 26, 2022 at 3:00 PM ET.

People around the world are restoring animals, plants, and trees in their landscapes and seascapes for future generations, and, in doing so, are finding creative ways to make a living.

Hear from visionaries and change makers from the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Africa, and the United States.

“Earth Optimism shows us how to find hope in the face of odds that might seem overwhelming. It reminds us that change happens when we focus on what works—when we collaborate to find solutions and celebrate our successes.”

—Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch
